Dark Light

If you have experience with video games, the odds are that you have heard about how MacBooks are not really a decent option for gaming.

The statement is understandable, considering what alternatives there are. Gaming consoles, custom-built desktop computers, and gaming laptops sound like much better options, right?

Well, the sentiments are changing in recent years. Video games are becoming more accessible on MacBooks for a couple of reasons.

First of all, video game developers are more keen to optimize their IPs for macOS, which was not really the case a while back.

Secondly, Apple engineers are putting extra effort into improving Mac hardware. Even if the improvements are small, they are still making a difference.

Having said all that, you should still be skeptical about AAA video games on a MacBook. At least for now, the options are pretty limited. On the other hand, you do not have to focus just on AAA games when there are plenty of other options.

Civilization VI

Take some time and enjoy turn-based strategies. Civilization VI is the go-to option. And even though the game has been around since 2016, it continues to receive updates and expansions to keep the content fresh. Fans are eager for the next installment in the franchise, but you can make do with Civ VI.

Multiple ways to approach the game is one of the best things about it. Cultural victories, domination, diplomacy, and other methods introduce variety.

Besides skirmishing and multiplayer games, you can also try scenarios that cover specific historical events.

Hades

Hades is considered the game of the year by many, and why would that not be the case? On the surface, the title does not seem that special. However, as soon as you start playing it, you get the reasoning behind so much praise.

As an indie game, Hades excels in virtually every area. You might be put off by the fact that it is rogue-like, but the progress is noticeable after every run, even if you have to die at the end of your run.

The writing, the soundtrack, the characters, the combat, the replayability, and other things about Hades make it an excellent game. And as a bonus, you will find the title extra enjoyable if you like Greek mythology.

Cuphead

Challenging video games are not for everyone. It is no secret that many gamers like to relax and take a more casual approach.

At the same time, if you want a challenge, then Cuphead is arguably the best consideration. Figuring out the mechanics of each encounter takes a while, and you will be distracted by the game’s visuals early on. However, once you get the hang of it, you are bound to appreciate how rewarding each battle is and how satisfying it is to clear difficult fights.

Also, do not worry about the performance. The MacBook should run Cuphead fine, meaning there is no need to speed it up.

Stardew Valley

Some gamers like to look for titles that they can sink their time into. In other words, a slow burner that does not end in a few hours.

Stardew Valley is a video game that is not on the radar by many because of the graphics. However, those simplistic visuals are part of the charm that the game offers.

Dota 2

Action brawlers are quite popular these days. Among different titles, Dota 2 stands out as the best option for those who like more complex gameplay. You get access to all the heroes. Unlike in games like LoL, there are no restrictions or the need to grind currency to unlock the content.

Dota 2 also has an active custom game community. If you get bored playing regular Dota 2 games, you can check what is available in the custom game section.

Diablo III

Blizzard announced that Diablo IV will be released in 2023, but even then, the odds are that the game might get delayed.

Meanwhile, if you are in the mood to play a dungeon crawler, then Diablo III is still a solid option, particularly for a MacBook owner.

Sometimes, you cannot figure out what you want to play. The idea of progressing a character by optimizing your items and skills while slaying demon hordes sounds like just the thing. If so, Diablo III is the right option.

Fortnite

The great thing about battle royale games is that you do not have to commit too much of your time. If you have an hour or so to play, then that should be enough to squeeze a couple of matches into your schedule.

Fortnite remains to be a popular option among battle royale players. It is easy to dismiss the game because of its graphics, but after a while, you get past this problem and can enjoy the game for what it has to offer.
