Dark Light

Movies and games have always had a closer connection. There has been an increasing trend in Hollywood to transform successful games in movies. While most of them have turned out to be disasters like Super Mario Bros, Mortal Kombat and Doom but there are some which garnered certain amount of liking from the fans like Resident Evil and Tomb Raider.

But there are many games which can be turned into good movies, given the right director, script and actors. With more and more games engaging into epic storytelling, astounding characters and alluring premise, here is a list of 5 games which have the capability of breaking the stereotype of failure of games turned into movies.

  1. Read Dead Redemption

Wait!!! Do I really have to explain about this game?? Being one of the most successful games of all times it garnered huge fan following with its subtle plot. Based on the classic western life this game boasts of its intriguing storyline, cinematic imagery, marvelous characterization and prepossessing backdrop with unmatched soundtrack. The Red Dead series with its authentic 1900’s feel set a benchmark for all the upcoming action adventure games and is still remembered as a cult classic.

This game was more of a movie thanks to its colossal landscapes and wonderful cinematography and (Fun fact) also known to inspire the famous TV series “Westworld”. But we would definitely like to see John Marston (in his cool outfit riding and wandering over the vast landscapes with his blazing guns, hunting, catching bandits and being the perfect badass he actually is) on the silver screen. The lively depiction of protagonist with his Outlaw attitude and western lifestyle with over the top action and perfect characterization is one good treat for all the movie buffs.

2. Splinter cell

Splinter Cell series is considered as one of the best stealth games of all time with abundance of action. The first Splinter cell game was released in 2002 and since then, the game became quite venerable around the world, with multiple sequels and expansions released over the past 16 years. With an excellent plot and military styled action this game series created its own niche market and proved to be most successful series for Ubisoft.

There have been several rumors about a Splinter cell film including the famous actor Tom Hardy, but nothing has ever come to fruition. Visualizing an efficient actor like Tom Hardy portraying the role of “Sam Fisher” with his sleek attitude and stealthy action running after an evil mastermind along with his trustworthy allies, variety of gadgets, shooting bad guys and completing the toughest of missions on the big screen is definitely a must watch. Think Mission Impossible meets Bourne Identity. With Prodigious backdrop, startling action sequences and astounding plot this particular game has all the qualities to be one of the best action games and the capacity to keep the audiences at the edge of their seats.

3. Prototype

Yes!! Prototype is the next game of our list, which (technically) may not be accepted by many gamers. Prototype entered into the market with a very unique plot idea which describes a virus that mutates individuals into hideous violent monsters. This concept was readily accepted by many gaming enthusiasts. Introducing two Super-powered characters like Alex Mercer and James Heller and their massive arsenal of moves and abilities and a variety of gory flesh eating monsters- this game had a lot to offer to its players with a touch of eccentricity.

Who would not like to see a different kind of superhero movie with the Short tempered protagonist James Heller and cruel antagonist Alex Mercer (Chris Hemsworth maybe?) with their monstrous powers (literally) releasing their havoc on New York. With a Pacific Rim like movie where Alex and James go at each other in an epic face off laying the city to waste is one hell of a plot. Provided with proper storyline, strong characterization and screenplay, Prototype can prove to be a great choice for the next unique superhero film. There is also a fascination with comic book and super hero films right now, so why not throw Prototype into the mix?

4. Mass Effect

There has been an increase in the craving for space oriented movies in Hollywood thanks to the effort of Interstellar, Gravity and many more. But how about a perfect blend of Space oriented Sci-fi action with a touch of Alien themed backdrop?? Sounds cool right- Well Mass Effect is one such game which plunges you into an all-out galactic war to save the galaxy from a race of powerful and nearly unstoppable foes. Being one of the most famous inter-galactic shooter, this game packs the perfect punch for all the Action-shooter players out there.

Bored of Star Wars. Star Trek too convulsed. Battlestar Galatica too niche. How about Mass Effect? Visualize a movie plot similar to “Guardians of the Galaxy” with a character like Commander Shepard with his weaponry going on multiple space missions and exploring vast corners of space, engaging with tenacious alien species with multiple missions. We would especially like to see a prequel to the first Mass Effect, on how humanity discovered the Element Zero and their ascension to the Citadl Council, with Christian Bale as lead. All of that action sequences with prodigious imagery, visual effects, fascinating characters, menacing Aliens and a great mix of sci-fi elements there is plenty of material to pull from Mass effect in order to produce the film. Given the potential of Hollywood to pull-off high budget movies with ease, this game definitely deserves a shot to shine on the Big screen.

5. Prey

Our list includes games of multiple categories, but the final one is reserved for a game of horror genre. Prey is one such game which utilized the concept of horror by aliens. Technically known as the Spiritual sequel of the hit game “System Shock”, Prey allows players to take the role of Morgan Yu, a human aboard a space station with numerous species of hostile aliens known collectively as the Typhon. Its upto the player to interact with the environment and use varieties of resources and weapons to fend off and defeat the gruesome  aliens. It is one of the most successful Horror game perfectly assorted with role-playing and stealth elements with strong narrative set in an open world environment.

Movies like Alien and Predator share same kind of story-line, but Prey as a game has depth in its concept and a very powerful narrative edge. It may not be one of the best game to be turned into a movie but if performed the right amount of research and characterization the movie can be a success. And let’s be honest who doesn’t like a good Alien movie with jump-scare horror(eventhough they are very common).
