Dark Light

Well you could call me butthurt right now. Being a PC gamer and always open to new games, I have somewhat always been a fan of Spiderman games, not because they are great, but because Spiderman is my favorite superhero and yeah, though the games have been lacking plot and proper storytelling, it is always fun to swing around the city.

With the latest news being that the upcoming Spiderman game is PS exclusive, I’m very disappointed.

Well, it’s not bad for the gamers, but for hardcore Spiderman fans, this might create a disparity. I feel like Sony is strong-arming people into buying the PS4 for just the game, the same thing Rockstar had done for GTA V to squeeze as many console sales as possible, where PC gamers were forced to buy the console versions if they didn’t want any spoilers. This is a good business strategy, but, taking a beloved character away from the hands of millions of gamers is ethically wrong. The Spiderman games have been multiplats for the past decade and making it PS exclusive is just, I dunno how to say it, simply bad.

But how many sales will they get from this? Even though Spiderman is partially Sony’s property, how many gamers do they think will buy a PS4 just for the Spiderman game. I can totally understand all other exclusives like God of War and Horizon: Zero Dawn, but Spiderman, seriously? I understand that the guys who are developing the game (I dunno their name, frankly don’t care after this news) are a subsidiary of Sony, but is this the right way to go? I have never been a fan of Sony exclusives but I am a huge fan of Spiderman and I’m saying this not as a butthurt gamer, but as a Spiderman fan. (Maybe a bit butthurt).

What do you guys think about Sony’s maneuver to make Spiderman a PS exclusive. If you have a PS4 and are a Spiderman fan, do not bother replying, what about the others? Do you think this is right on Sony’s part.

  1. When u dont even know the name of the developers, and when u dont care even, why bother about exclusivity? Its all the Business. Microsoft has Halo, Gears, Forza. Whereas Sony has Killzone, God of War, Gran Turismo. And when you see the worldwide sales figures, Sony is killing it with almost double the consoles this generation than Microsoft. And when u compare games released on PC and Consoles, u know which sells more. So even from a Business point, with almost double the sales as Xbox, there is more chance they will have more sales on Sony than Microsoft. And Spidey being a worldwide famous and Sony doing well outside US. It only makes sense and Sony owns Spidey so yeah. Insomniac is the Developer if u still dont know and they have a good reputation with such games like Ratchet (Sony) and Crash Bandicoot. They’ve also done Sunset Overdrive on Xbox One. I think ur wrong to criticize for it being a Exclusive to PS4 and you being a gamer, i think its wrong on ur end to say u dont care who the developer is.

    1. I knew the developers (Didn’t want to speak it loud in disgust). I don’t mind the other exclusives, because they are older games in new disguises and I don’t find them intriguing. Maybe the PS4 sales overcome the Xbox One and PC, but they do not overtake the PC segment by miles in terms of games sales. In a recent poll, Ubisoft had said that 27% of their sales were from PS4 and 21% from PCs, even though Ubisoft is not a PC centred company. Almost all companies have the same scenario where the PS4 sales just edge out the PC sales. Sony does not fully own Spiderman and the article is not about exclusives, it’s about Spiderman games that have been multiplats for over a decade now, and not everything is thought in terms of business by the consumers. They are taking away Spiderman from millions of gamers, by making it PS exclusive. Again, I don’t mind the other exclusives, but this has made me presently anti-Sony.

      1. Calling yourself anti-Sony is a little absurd. Sony has historically had rights to the Spiderman franchise and new partnership allowed Spiderman to return back to Marvel’s MCU. Marvel has built on a partnership with Sony over the many years and it only made sense that they both worked cohesively in creating an AAA video game.

It’s also not entirely Sony’s fault in wanting to keep it in-house. Marvel stated that they are very selective to who they work with, and ultimately decided to work with Sony and Insomniac.

I understand the frustration in that PC gamers and XBOX gamers are unable to play the game but it’s a business model and Marvel isn’t keen on “Oh, PC sales will be much more than PS4, so maybe we should do multiplat.” No, they decided to create partnerships in ensuring the highest possible quality. Heck, Marvel earns billions and sales is probably not one of their top priorities, as it seems quality is. Exclusivity ensures that quality, as its being worked on the group up by those three companies. Also, exclusivity is what gives consumers incentives to purchase their products… again, another business model. Obviously if Xbox was to sponsor the Spiderman, it would also be exclusive.

If anything, you should be speaking an ill regard towards Marvel as well for disallowing multi-platform. But honestly, I’m not going to complain knowing that Marvel is helping in the story, with Insomniac and Sony Interactive working in hand to give this game the quality it deserves. Look at the other AAA Sony games after all!

        1. Sony doesn’t have rights to Spiderman they have a movie license for it but for other media all rights goes to Marvel. I think this Spiderman is a one time deal for the movie.

      2. It is quite simple…. Sony is paying for the game. They are investing in it. So they decide what to do with it. You are of course entiteled to not like it, but if you owned a store would you think it was fair if you had to share your revenue with the competitors store on the other side of the street?

And it’s not like anyone else was making Spider-man Games. You act as though Sony has stolen something from you, but considering every spider-man game since “Spider-Man 2 The Movie Game” has been considered a failure both critically and possibly financially, you should probably be thanking Sony that they are making another entry into your favorite superhero. Exclusivity or not.

However blaming the developers seems ignorant and silly. Insomniac have proven that they are just as capable and willing to develop games for all platforms. Sony however, as the publisher, decides what they do with their money and their properties.

And no they don’t own Spider-man as a whole, but from this announcement it is clear they have gotten the Video-game rights. As other people have pointed out this was probably part of the spider-man to the MCU deal Sony and Marvel made. And therefore probably a big reason behind why we got Spider-Man in Civil war and are now getting a new movie with your favorite Superhero.

      3. Then why don’t you blame Marvel? What did you expect Sony to do in this situation?

Morals and business don’t mix so it’s best to keep your feelings out of it. Smdh!

          Morals and business don’t mix

This isn’t an issue of Morals or Ethics. It is 100% business. Sony negotiated a deal that was good for them with Marvel. At the end of the day if they produce a great Spider-Man game that is better than the garbage that Activision was releasing I think it is a win-win for gamers. It would suck if you don’t own a PS4 but hey you have a GREAT reason to own one now. Likely this game won’t see the light of day until Holiday 2017, so you have PLENTY of time to save up some money.

      4. I understand if its a part of a trilogy or sequel, but this is an independent game, and not the bullshit Activision has been churning out. I am not sure what the fuss is about.

  2. If you want to play this, get a PS4, it’s the reason exclusive games exist, to sell consoles and to lure you to get more games for it later….

  3. Exclusives are a selling point. If you want to play games on a certain platform then just buy that platform.

Wonder if it’ll end up being “timed” exclusive…

I won’t say NO for sure, but this is a Sony distributed game, I bet Sony’s renegotiation of Spider-Man with Marvel likely was the genesis of this. The only saving grace is that this is being developed by Insomniac which is under EA now. I hadn’t seen any news about Sunset Overdrive coming to PS4 so if I was an Xbox or a PC guy — I wouldn’t hold my breath.

lol, as if the public would even know

When TItanfall came out, it was pretty well known that Respawn would make the sequel for PS4. When Tomb Raider came out it was very well known that it would come to PS4 as well.

The public found out about those two games.

  4. Sweet lord, people. You’ve got your facts flying all over the place! Insomniac are the creators of: Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, Spyro, and Sunset Overdrive. Naughty Dog is responsible for Crash Bandicoot. If you’re going to correct someone, do so without spouting out additional incorrect information. As far as the issue of Sony keeping Spider-Man exclusive to Playstation, why in the hell wouldn’t they? They own the rights to Spider-Man and their console is far and away the dominant game system. Add to that their strong and long standing ties to Insomniac, and this becomes a no-brainer. Case closed.

What exactly is this in response to? Was it a comment or something in the article? Who was responsible for the incorrect info?

They own the rights to Spider-Man and their console is far and away the dominant game system. Add to that their strong and long standing ties to Insomniac, and this becomes a no-brainer. Case closed.

Prior to Sony renegotiating with Marvel, Sony owned all the rights to Spider-Man Movies. I don’t think they had any options to make a Spider-Man video game. I believe Sony may have changed that when they struck a deal with Marvel. It is likely that is what made the deal possible,

      1. BTW I didn’t edit the article. I have nowhere mentioned anything about Racheet and Clank and any other game, because I have not played many PS games tbh. So I would rather not write about it than get the wrong info

        1. “I have not played many PS games tbh.” Then why are you bitching? Oh, I see. It is because you are a PC elitist gamer. Here is a thought: instead of buying that new graphics card that is going to be between $400 to $600, go buy the PS4 if you want to play it so bad. While you are at it, you will be able to play other Sony exclusives that you will not be able to play on PC (Bloodborne comes to mind). If you don’t want to go that rout, then just suck it up buttercup and quit acting like an entitled noob gamer, which you seem to be.

          1. EXACTLY. These pc idiots say, ‘oh I can’t afford a ps4″ but yet you can afford a pc. Get the heck out of here. Not you, Mr. Gone.

    1. Tomb Raider is on PC and is coming to PS4 (Dunno when though). This fight between large companies screws up with consumers.

      1. @pratyushezio96:disqus

You don’t think between Tomb Raider and Titanfall, Sony wasn’t looking for reprisal?

I was kind of shocked Sony didn’t do an exclusive Spider-Man game for PS3. It is likely when Sony and Marvel restructured the agreement for Spider-Man movies they obtained the rights to Spider-Man in video games.

The fact is PC gamers can pick up a PS4 for less than most of your higher end video cards.

        1. True, but why would I get a console for simply one game that I’m interested in? Isn’t that a waste of money.

          1. @pratyushezio96:disqus

If you are truly the Spider-Man fan you say you are, you would have to at least consider it. Didn’t you just publish an article whining about not being able to play Spider-Man on your PC?

          2. Yes, I agree, I’m whining, but not everyone has the budget to buy a new console for just one game. And it’s not just that, the cost of the games is just too high on consoles. And plus I’ll need to pay subscription for playing multiplayer, if I choose to buy another game. It’s 30% financial reason that I can’t get the game

          3. Well you messed up that one when your article labelled Insomniac as a subsidiary studio of Sony Interactive Entertainment. Insomniac is an independent games developer that often works in partnership with Sony, that’s a huge distinction.

Why didn’t you just look this information up before writing an article on it? Seriously, it would have only taken you minutes.

Spiderman is exclusive to PS4 because I imagine, Sony are funding this project. Have you not noticed that Spiderman games have been terrible for the past 15 years? A good Spiderman game wasn’t going to appear on its own and fans should be pleased to finally have a Spiderman game, with a good developer at the helm. Ultimately if you’re a big Spiderman fan, you will buy a PS4 to play it, and that’s okay. It’s okay for a platform holder to want to bolster the value of their system with exclusive intellectual property, in fact, that’s kind of the point of owning either particular one of these systems to begin with.

          4. Exactly. I always find the person with the console the game is exclusive on gives the same “Why don’t you buy that console then?” But what if we can’t afford to buy an entire console for ONE. DAMN. GAME.

I didn’t buy an Xbox One just to play Dead Rising and you shouldn’t have to buy a PS4 just to play Spider-Man.

  5. Insomniac tried going exclusive to M$. Sunset Overdrive bombed. They went Multi platform with Fuse and.. it bombed. Insomniac has always been known as a Sony brand. This game will sell with Sony.

Sony has every right to keep this game exclusive.

    1. @dogmanx23:disqus

Insomniac tried going exclusive to M$. Sunset Overdrive bombed. They went Multi platform with Fuse and.. it bombed.

Fuse came out for PS3/X360 before Sunset Overdrive. Insomniac was contracted by MS to make Sunset Overdrive, they didn’t “try” Xbox exclusivity and decided it wasn’t for them.

  6. @pratyushezio96:disqus

I feel like Sony is strong-arming people into buying the PS4 for just the game,

Its just a game, there are plenty of Spider-Man games you can play that aren’t exclusive to PS4. That being said this is being developed by Insomniac so I wouldn’t say this will NEVER come to PC. I am thinking since Sony is distributing it it may not come to Xbox. Although Insomniac is under EA so I wouldn’t say never.

the same thing Rockstar had done for GTA V to squeeze as many console
sales as possible, where PC gamers were forced to buy the console
versions if they didn’t want any spoilers.

RockStar is smart by catering to consoles first. RockStar uses a more traditional model of development with years invested into a product I think they have learned that consoles are their true bread winner. Releasing a title such as GTA V on PC along side Consoles would have eaten into their revenue streams because many PC players would have simply pirated the game.

This is a good business strategy, but, taking a beloved character away from the hands of millions of gamers is ethically wrong.

Excuse me? You mean to tell me that you are entitled to a Spider-Man game just by virtue of you being a fan? What about the millions and millions of people who only use iOS and Android? Aren’t they being left out in the cold?

Spider-Man is not being taken away from ANYONE. You can elect to buy the game or not.

Even though Spiderman is partially Sony’s property, how many gamers do they think will buy a PS4 just for the Spiderman game.

If the game is compelling, fun and gathers good press I bet they will do quite well.

Look this is business, this is competition, you can sit on the side lines and boo hoo hoo to yourself that you won’t get to play Spider-Man or you can applaud Sony for making a sound business move.

  7. A short summary of this article would be “WAHHHHHHH WAHHHHHHH WAHHHHHHH, a game isn’t coming to my platform. I’m an elitist Pee Wee! I should have everything! Wahhhhh it’s not fair”.

  8. Yea. I dont like this either. I dont like the whole exclusives culture anyway, but Spider man ? I can go to a comic shop and buy the comics. I can watch the movies. But to play a game as a fan I need a PS4. Right. I dont think this is a good move. I mean, what percent of gamers on PS4 are spiderman fans ? I wont buy a PS4 for Spiderman becuase I already have a PC and XBOX, and gaming is an expensive enough hobby already. Like you I was dissapointed with this after E3.

      1. Yea, I feel your pain. On the upside, if you are in the “PC gaming master race ” , you can get Doom pretty much half price on steam. Then we can add a new monitor and a new graphics card….. 🙂

Its sad because I just did this.

  9. Yeah, I don’t know anyone – apart from hardcore Sony PlayStation 4 owners, who I’m not friends with anyway – who is particularly happy about this news. We can only hope that Insomniac and Sony have mercy to us Xbox and PC owners, or maybe even NX owners (I know that’s a while away, bit Sony exclusives are always a LONG while away too)!

I don’t know, I think for exclusives you should stick to your own characters like Master Chief or Nathan Drake, not steal globally and cross-platform famous characters… this generation it seems Sony enjoys doing this. Usually after a company fails a generation, they comeback the following one with die hard intentions and no mercy. It’s the circle of gaming life, lol. In short, I’m pissed off, and I think they should open it up to Xbox One and PC fans. I mean, Insomniac aren’t owned by Sony anyway, hopefully it ends up timed exclusive.

  10. As a PS4 owner I think it sucks. I don’t gain anything from other people not being able to play games. Part of me also feels like “Well hang on when Tomb Raider, Dead Rising and various other games I wanted were made Xbox exclusives all the xbox gamers did was mock me over it”

My point being if you’re an xbox gamer and this pisses you off and you’re the type of xbox gamer who was laughing at us PS4 owners when it happened to us well do you see now why exclusives are bad for everyone?

So I hope there is a way for this to come to Xbox One and PC because more people being able to play it doesn’t effect me in the slightest. In fact I’d encourage PC gamers to try and play a pirated version because well it’s not like Sony is planning on selling the game to you any day so why not?
