Dark Light

If Tofu propaganda was real, then it is this game right here. I have replaced paneer (cottage cheese) with Tofu at my household, solely because of this game, and therefore it is safe to say, that the game successfully delivers what it truly aims for.

The strongest Tofu has been around via Steam since October 2024 but has now finally made its way on the Nintendo Switch on February 13, 2025. Here’s Gameffine’s official review for The Strongest Tofu.

Love, Sweat, Skills and Tofu

The game does not have a storyline of its own. Instead, it’s a documentary presented in a way that Gen-Z will shut up and listen to. The best cinematographers came together with one of the most authentic Tofu makers in Japan and merged it with a game made out of pure passion, love and true knowledge of how a video game works.

Just like general Tofu, you can find multiple types of it. Each variety is iterated into difficulty modes that you can choose from. Strong Tofu can help you pass the level with the breeze, while the soft and silkier ones will break apart with harsh impact. Once you’ve started your journey, you’re presented with absolutely easy platforming levels that anyone can complete. This chapter starts with the visuals of the Tofu factory starting their process of rinsing soybeans to begin making Tofu.

You have only one mechanic to get around – Charge Jumps. As a tofu, you can only converge all your energy at one place and focus it in a particular direction. Mastering the amount of energy consumed and towards which direction is the only way you’re getting around in this game. After a few levels, you’ll also be introduced to enemies. The variety of enemies includes a Goose, Crab, Turtle, sometimes a bull, Bluefin Tuna and certain more entities.

Each chapter ends with a boss fight as well. Instead of charging around at it, you have to use your environment to your advantage. Each boss has a unique approach towards defeating it, leading to the final ultimate battle. But before you think about the end, be prepared to fight against a really giant Fish, Kong, T-Rex, and the Guardian of the Soybean.

Each chapter pushes the difficulty up a notch, so be prepared to sweat it out once you arrive in the final stretch of chapters, and put to the test the platforming skills you have been harboring for so long.

Be Better, Be Tofu

Let’s be honest. I rarely see a platformer done so well. The game is undoubtedly bizarre, strange and does not make sense. But that is what makes it special. The first game that I can think of after playing this title is Astro Bot, 2024’s GOTY. The sound queues, audio, silly designs, which are low quality, but not half-baked. Upgrades, pacing, boss-fights, save points, optimization, enemy AI, QTEs, there’s everything and that too made by an individual developer with support.

A lot of AAA and a particular AAAA could not do what this game has already done, and now pushing it to a well-reputed platform with bug-free performance. What pushes beyond the quality of the game is the documentary style presentation of the actual making of Tofu. This entire experience makes it the best way I, as an individual, could know the efforts and tradition of making Tofu.

It’s simple, I go through levels of platforming, defeat a boss and get rewarded with a footage of the process of Tofu being made in real life. All of this for a mere $5 is a steal deal. There is an enormous library of silly platformer games that just exists on Steam or the Switch Store, but what differentiates this game and the others is the fact that this is an actual game with a progression system.

Visually, this game manages to do what it can. I won’t say it has one of the best art styles or color tones, but it is extremely bizarre like it’s supposed to be. As for the audio, I really thought it to be some silly Japanese indie styled game bgm. But it was after I finished the game, I realised, it’s the horn of the tofu seller when he makes his rounds across town selling Tofu. Which, at the end, adds soul to the game as well.

Verdict

The Strongest Tofu is an extremely impressive platformer all about the love of Tofu. It made me want to have Tofu in real life and I did. As an indie, it just simply blows away all expectations and truly marks itself as a signature product from the developer. A fantastic progression system, boss-fights, difficulty makes it all worth the while spending time in the game. For a price this minimum, you should already have started playing this instead of reading all the way here.
