Dark Light

Star Wars Outlaws is an action-adventure RPG and Ubisoft’s most promising adventure in a long while. In partnership with Lucasfilm Games, Ubisoft has taken what it takes pride in and merged it with the Star Wars universe that is loved worldwide. Star Wars Outlaw will be released on 30th August on the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. It’ll be released 3 days earlier for all deluxe edition owners.

Let’s take a jump into our official Star Wars Outlaws Review.

The Outlaw

Star Wars Outlaw is a breathtaking journey by Kay Vess, along with her partner in crime and probably the most adorable creature across galaxies – Nix. The journey starts with Kay trying to get through another day and hoping for a job that would change her life and she could get a chance to visit all core planets of the galaxies. But only if her objective were that simple.

Kay Vess first tries to fix the spike that would allow her to perform the most basic lockpicking, but she has to scavenge the credits for the repair job. An unusual yet brilliant way of exploring how she spends her life as a thief, you are allowed to explore the limited area of Cantonica at Canto, stealing, gambling and picking up scraps from nooks and corners.

As soon as her spike is recovered, she proceeds ahead at her first hit, stealing from a local cartel which goes wrong. Running away from her failure again, she tries to find shelter, only to see her only friend take the blame for it. Annoyed and hoping for Kay to get a better shot in her life, she’s provided a major job of a heist that could get her enough for a spaceship.

This is where the true opening of the game begins, a heist which goes terribly wrong but only for a major turn in her life. A legendary spaceship, a best friend and the will to be at the top. This is how Kay Vess began her journey, jumping across galaxies.

An Outlaw’s Loyalty

The game undoubtedly fills all the check marks to be a rapidly fluid action adventure with multiple opportunities for any given scenario through its variety of features. The game offers Kay complete freedom on how to tackle a scenario and at the same time takes control of a linear experience to perfectly deliver a storytelling scenario.

At the linear experience, you’re completing quests to becoming a legendary outlaw and bringing together every piece of equipment you would need for it. But when you’re exploring the world, you are dealing with the factions of the game. Four factions rule the criminal underworld, and your loyalty will be placed as per your actions. Trespass, brawl or do anything wrong, your loyalty is reduced and favours removed. Assist, Help, and take sides during your choices and the faction will let you find a new home.

Apart from factions, you are destined to be lost in vast worlds and their open fields. Every corner and building may have a treasure that’ll make your life easier. Find intels, and solve mysteries or simply rob smugglers of their loot before they can do anything about it. If crime is what you’re involved in, why not be the best one around?

Exploring opportunities will be your best way to make it out alive from all the problems of the factions and especially the imperial empire. Being detected is optional but not at all advised. Slicing and picking is your way through the biggest of the fortress. Slicing is a unique take where your prompts have to sync with an A/V indication. Remembering the rhythm and tapping the trigger will open up all doors and containers. Slicing on the other hand is for hacking computers and terminals. It’s basically wordle but in the form of symbols and icons. The better you are at it, the more credits you get from doing so as well.

Sneaking around any area is almost similiar to the classic Ubisoft approach in Assassin’s Creed or Watch Dogs. But things are much easier because of your unsuspected friend – Nix. Nix can immediately attack or distract an enemy, easily allowing you to reach any corners you want. Nix can also fetch, trigger explosives, open gates and vents, and to be honest do everything you can but more! Except shooting of course.

A mechanic that perfectly aligns with the direction of the game and keeps it interesting throughout is surely what all the fans deserve. But the only thing that still felt short is the extremely easy to deal with enemy AI. They will give up searching in a room full of knocked enemies and will forget you even existed a few seconds after seeing you.

You get to do endless things in the game and are sure to spend your first 10 hours simply exploring the first world and its opportunities before even committing to the main storyline.

Speeding Through the Planets

Star Wars Outlaws is astonishing for its artistic and extremely detailed world design with a beautiful system of travelling across the solar systems. The game is truly majestic as a whole and we cannot stop thinking about it.

The graphics are easy on the eyes but definitely, a challenge for your system if you want to see the best out of it. The game runs flawlessly and we have encountered zero bugs and crashes in our 20 hours of gameplay. Although on slightly lower-end systems, a patch or two might help in getting a 60 FPS performance.

The world design truly takes us by surprise as we see no element being repeated in any new world. Exploring each world and its deep areas is like a new beginning and a fresh experience. It’s almost surreal to and we have found ourselves distracted from the main objective multiple times staring at views or finding ourselves at the extremely addictive sidegame of Sabacc! Overall, the colour palette, the traversal designs and even the outfit of the game constantly bring out the freshness and make the game an experience instead of just an adventure.

And it would be just unfair if we don’t speak about the OST. The soundtracks delivered are awesome, especially the ones being played in a canteen of any given planet.

Verdict

Star Wars Outlaw is a dramatic action-adventure game, that takes your adventure to a whole new level with constant action. The graphics are destined to blow you away and the freedom of the open world will keep you hooked to the game for endless hours. It’s not so challenging AI is unfortunately noticeable but does not bother the rest of the amazing experiences and the story it holds.
