Dark Light

Oxenfree has been one of the more surprising games of this year. It is a supernatural adventure game with a gorgeous art style, immersive atmosphere, superb voice acting, sophisticated dialogue progression and a great story – all these elements cohesively meld together into a great narrative work of art.

It isn’t your cliche teen horror adventure, but rather is a well thought out and expertly crafted tale. The sense of realism that the game provides with interaction between the characters – Alex, Jonas, Ren, Nona and Clarissa – as they explore the weird phenomenons happening on the isolated Edwards Island, as well as the eerie atmosphere of the various creepy areas on the island that keeps you on edge at all times, is the game’s high point; Alex’s radio also plays a large role with the gameplay and adds to the feeling of being trapped in a place you don’t belong, where the past still lives on.

Even with its short run time, there’s plenty of replay value to Oxenfree with collectibles, unexplored dialogue choices and different endings and overall is hands-down one of the best games to release this year and my GOTY. For those who enjoy a great story, this is one game you shouldn’t miss. Props to Night School Studio for such a splendid game and best of luck for their future endeavors.
