NVIDIA has been under considerable flak recently for the big performance hit which occurs when players decide to go for ray tracing while turning up the quality. This was amplified by the fact that the RTX graphics card were found to not maintain a constant 60 FPS at 1440p with ray tracing on.

NVIDIA and DICE have been working on a update to fix the issue with the performance. The new Tides of War : Chapter 1 Overture update seeks to boost fps by as much as 50% on all RTX GPUs.

GeForce RTX 2080 Ti gamers will now be able to achieve 60+ FPS at 1440p resolution with Raytraced Reflections set to Ultra quality.

GeForce RTX 2080 gamers will now be able to achieve 60+ FPS at 1440p resolution with Raytraced Reflections set to Medium quality.

GeForce RTX 2070 gamers will now be able to achieve 60+ FPS at 1080p resolution with Raytraced Reflections set to Medium quality.

The optimizations include the following, also referenced in DICE’s official patch notes:

  • Made stability improvements while running the game with DXR Ray Tracing on.
  • Improved performance of several components of the ray tracing implementation.
  • Improved ray tracing performance against foliage and vegetation.
  • Using frame buffer data, where applicable, to increase overall ray tracing quality.
  • Removed inactive geometry from ray traced scenes.
  • Fixed medium quality setting not applying correctly.

New NVIDIA drivers also seek to improve ray tracing performance in all games, including Battlefield V and Just Cause 4, the newest game to implement ray tracing as a graphical feature. The driver also improves the performance in World of Warcraft : Battle for Azeroth, the latest expansion to the MMO phenomenon.
