Athlon Games has announced that they will be partnering with Middle-earth Enterprises, to develop and publish a free-to-play massively multiplayer online video game based on The Lord of the Rings, the iconic fantasy literary work of J.R.R. Tolkien.
The game will be set in the world of Middle-earth during the years leading to the events of The Lord of the Rings, and aims to provide Middle-earth fans throughout the world with a new, immersive game experience for epic exploration of the Tolkien universe.
The original LoTR MMO came out in 2007 with a subscription based model but soon switched to a f2p model. It will be interesting to see how Athlon games tackle the legendary source material in a time where MMORPG genre, other than WoW is facing stagnation.
