I am big RPG fan. I love the Diablo series to bits. I have hundred of hours in the Witcher 3, and I tend to loose myself in Dragon Age from time to time. Time and again, my most favorite games come from that genre.
This year I had the pleasure to play Final Fantasy XV, towards the end of the year. I did not have high hopes both because 2016 hasn’t been a great year, and the general consensus for recent Final Fantasies has been less than enthusiastic. But thank god I picked it up.
Final Fantasy has so many old school RPG hooks that even I had forgotten existed. Plethora of side quests, huge sprawling forests, huge focus on potions and items, and of course difficult dungeons. Plus it had that Final Fantasy production quality I had heard so much about. What I enjoy the most though is the supreme balance that the game maintains in creating a world where both technology and magic live side by side and both accepted without the other being opressed or frowned upon.
I never got into the Final Fantasy franchise, and would have probably skipped on Final Fantasy XV if Games The Shop would not have been kind enough to send me a review copy. But I am glad I picked it up.If I hadn’t played FFXV this year I wouldn’t have had a GOTY this year. I entered the game without any lingering bias towards the franchise, and I left feeling satisfied, that’s not something I can say about most games that I have played this year.
And for this reason Final Fantasy XV is my Game Of The Year.
