Among the many hits featured at Tokyo Game Show this year, none has been shrouded in quite as much mystery as Death Stranding. Directed by Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear franchise, his first title outside of Konami has featured several trailers over the past few years. However, despite being showcased at E3 2016, the game’s story remains as cryptic as possible.
Take a look at the latest trailer below.
Hideo Kojima’s Legacy
Most gamers are aware that Hideo Kojima is known for developing the Metal Gear Solid series. Beginning with Metal Gear on the MSX in 1987, it would follow with a sequel – Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. Kojima would go on to make Snatcher and Policenauts. With a huge love of cyberpunk and futuristic storylines, many of these elements found their way into Kojima’s blockbuster 1998 hit, Metal Gear Solid, for PlayStation.
Through the five Metal Gear Solid titles, Kojima wove a lengthy, convoluted tale. While Metal Gear Solid kept a streamlined focus on stopping the FOXHOUND terrorists, it didn’t come without many twists and surprises. However, Metal Gear Solid 2 was known for its mindboggling storytelling, a thematic that stayed with the series till its conclusion with Metal Gear Solid V.
Death Stranding, judging by the trailers, still seeks to pit the player in a world of convoluted mystery. But the direction, presentation, and aesthetic, coupled with Kojima’s presence and legacy, keeps us glued wanting to know more about the game with every trailer. Also, if you want to know more about the story, you can check here for Kojima’s take on the synopsis..
The first part of the gameplay trailer features exploration. Sam will use a ladder to cross gaps or skateboard down hills on a device. He wears a huge backpack that carries all your gear in it. His pack carries gear to deliver to his destination.
The second part of the trailer, however, delves into the meat and potatoes of the game. You’ll find combat and stealth elements all too familiar to the Metal Gear Solid series. Sneak around a base and take down guards from behind. In addition, one part even has him fighting against a huge, four-legged beast. Sam utilizes various explosives and weapons he procured prior to the battle. Also, you’ll also see the camera shift positions to help aid in combat as well.
