Nether Realm, the developer house behind games like Mortal Kombat and Injustice, are ready to bring us a new WWE game. The game rumored to be called WWE Immortals, is slated for a 2015 release on mobile platforms.
In a joint press release by Warner Bros. and WWE, the 2 companies announced that WWE Immortals will be a free to play mobile games based in a “re-imagined WWE universe”. Judging by that statement and the fact the Nether Realm would be creating the game, one can guess that it would be a fighting game not unlike Injustice. Though all of that is basically speculation before we actually get more info.
Personally I would want Nether Realms to make a great game. If not for the sole reason to ask Yukes to step up their game. Yukes has been giving us the same physics engine for the last 8 years. I would really like Nether Realms to strike this out of the park, so that WWE seriously thinks about involving Nether Realm in the next WWE 2k game. I am pretty sure they would do a better job than Yukes.
Having said that there are a few challenges. WWE is not in the Attitude Era any longer, and Nether Realm makes games which are “violent” to say the least. The game is a free to play, so I am guessing WWE is aiming it towards all the underage WWE fans. Nether Realms on the other hand has never made a game which does not involve blood and gore. Finding middle ground between the 2 sensibilities is going to be the most difficult hurdle.
The chances of both companies coming out of this partnership with their heads held high is very low. But I guess we will cross that bridge when we get there. For now, Nether Realms is busy with MK-X which is slated for early 2015, and WWE is busy with getting their WWE Network subscriptions up. So I don’ think we would be hearing about WWE Immortals any time soon.
Are you excited for WWE Immortals? Do you still follow WWE? Do you still care for mobile games?
