Watch_Dogs: Legion was one of the best games showcased during E3 2019. The neo-techno world of post-Brexit Britain, the option to play as any NPC and of course all sorts of open-world tomfoolery really won our hearts over. But one thing that has remained in our minds was how would Ubisoft implement the advertised ‘play as any NPC with permadeath in effect’. It looks to be such a daunting feature to have in an open world game.
Speaking to Gaming Bolt, creative director, Clint Hocking explained that;
“Permadeath is always an opt-in gamble for the player,” “When your health goes to ‘zero’ you enter the critically injured state. At this point you are always offered the opportunity to Surrender, and be sent to jail. You can systemically free Operatives who have been sent to jail, or wait for them to be released. But if you choose not to Surrender, and Keep Fighting, then you are risking Permadeath.”
“Since every mission, every line of dialogue, and every cutscene has been written to account for every possible character, the loss of one of your characters means that the rest of your team will have to pick up where they left off and the plot and the story will carry on,”
Even with the above explanation, we are still skeptical as to how all of this would play out in a narrative and technical level. I guess we’ll see in person when Watch_Dogs: Legion launches for PC, consoles and Stadia on March 6, 2020
