Vancouver game development studio, SkyBox Labs’ latest project, the Bedrock version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch, is now available. The team at SkyBox Labs has spent the better part of the last year working on Minecraft projects including work on the Better Together Update, and most recently bringing the Bedrock version to Nintendo Switch. With the Bedrock version, Minecraft players on Nintendo Switch are now able to connect with friends on non-Nintendo platforms including Xbox One, Windows 10 PCs, Android, and iOS.
A longtime development partner, SkyBox Labs’ partnership with Microsoft remains stronger than ever as they continue to work on both the Minecraft and Halo universes. “SkyBox Labs has been an excellent partner in developing the Bedrock version of Minecraft for Nintendo Switch. Their expertise in Nintendo Switch development was instrumental to bringing our players a seamless cross-play experience,” said Travis Howland, Minecraft Director, Microsoft Studios. “We couldn’t have asked for a greater partner in Microsoft Studios. It’s an honour to develop such an iconic and beloved game, and to be part of this dedicated and creative community,” expressed Shyang Kong, Co-founder, SkyBox Labs. “We are seeing more and more games support cross-play between consoles. It’s a great thing for players and for the industry, and we’re happy to bring this feature to Minecraft players on Nintendo Switch,” added Derek MacNeil, Co-founder, SkyBox Labs.
One of BC’s fastest growing game studios, SkyBox Labs had the largest growth among all BC game studios in 2017, almost doubling in size year over year to over 100 team members. The team’s rate of growth has continued into 2018, and the studio is actively hiring engineers, designers, artists, and other studio roles.
