Dark Light

Yup, read that headline again, and then just read it again, and then probably sigh in despair. A console which has made cheaper pricing one of its mainstay against its competition (X-Box One)is priced so high, that even Amitabh would need a ladder.

PS4 will release in India on 6th January 2014

First the good news, the PS-4 is hitting the Indian market on the 6th of January 2014. Pre-Orders have started and you can find one on perhaps the most reliable e-commerce store in India Flipkart.

Now, the bad-news. The next gen console is priced at Rs.39,999 which is an easy way of saying it cost Rs.40,000. This price is so ridiculous its not even funny. The PS4 is priced at $399 in the U.S.A (approx Rs 25,000). In-fact, Brazil (where the taxes are so high, Sony is planning to manufacture console inside the country) is the only country where the PS4 will cost more than in India.

The console is priced at Rs. 39,999

Sony PlayStation’s country head Atindriya Bose hid behind Indian taxes for the high premium. But really, I thought the era of overpriced consoles ended with the PS-3. If you take into account that you need to buy a separate controller priced at Rs.5000 (if you want to play two player games), the Playstation Eye priced at Rs.12,000 and at-least 3 AAA game titles each at Rs.3-4000. Buying a complete package would easily driven you to Rs.70,000.

Ok, deep breaths. Deep breaths. Calm down. PS4 is an awesome gaming console. I reviewed its launch at Sony’s press conference, and then its evolution at E3, and quite frankly I leaned towards the Playstation more as compared to the X-Box One. It still has a great PSN network, a superior hardware performance, and no privacy/legal bullshit attached to it.

What do you think of this price point for the PS4. Would you buy a console which is way over priced as a Christmas gift. Tell us in the comments.
