In what was expected to be a historical moment of the year 2017, a game that has come out recently, that too in Early Access, has beaten the previously most played games of the generation, to become the top played game on Steam.
PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS, a battle royale survival shooter game, had beaten the stalwart Counter Strike : Global Offensive and has been constantly getting more players than the shooter of the century, from Valve themselves. In what seemed as an impossible move, PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS has surpassed even DOTA 2, the top played game on Steam, yet another stalwart from Valve, and become the top played game on Steam.
Experts are still in the dark as to how this game is getting so many players, because PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS requires a paid subscription on Steam, whereas DOTA 2 is a free game, and PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS requires a beefy PC to run, whereas DOTA 2 runs even on mediocre PC.
However, it is to be noted that PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS started from a mod of ARMA 3 itself. Could it be that Counter Strike is remade? Even Counter Strike started out as a mod of Half Life, and it became a huge hit with the public.
Forums and groups on social media still argue about which game is the best among the top 3 played games on Steam, but if numbers were to speak for themselves, PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS is the best – atleast among a majority of all gamers.
