Konami today announced a new four-player stealth co-op game set in an alternate  Metal Gear universe, Metal Gear Survive.

Metal Gear Survive is directly set after the events of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes in an “alternate timeline caused by unexplained wormholes forming in the sky” and forces players to battle a force of crystalline zombies (yep. There are zombies in this game).

Survive will take you on a distorted desert landscape “full of massive half-formed structures, living biological threats, and the remains of a once strong military force now litter the landscape”.

In a struggle to stay alive on this harsh terrain filled with deadly creatures, soldiers who were previously on Motherbase now must work cooperatively in order to survive.

Here’s the official trailer (courtesy of IGN):

“Metal Gear Survive will offer a fresh take on the series’ famed stealth elements,” said Tomotada Tashiro, Konami European president, “but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multiplayer experience.”

Metal Gear Survive will be the first Metal Gear game Konami’s developing in absence of series creator, Hideo Kojima, and there are still words from Konami as if anyone from the original Kojima Productions team is working on the game or not.

Also, as IGN pointed out, Big Boss appears at the beginning of the game’s trailer, however, it still remains unclear if he or any of the recognisable characters from Kojima’s  game will appear in the core game. Though Konami does assure that this game is “a new addition to the Metal Gear Solid V experience”.

Survive is powered by FOX Engine, which powered both instalments of Metal Gear Solid V before.

Metal Gear Survive is slated for a 2017 release for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
