League of Legends (LoL) is widely regarded as being one of the most popular games in the world. There are over 27 million active players and this is a number that is ever-increasing. Those that play LoL are part of a community and if you try to join that community, there are certain expectations. The main one being that you know how to play!

Learn the language
If you’re serious about playing LoL and playing it competitively, then you’re going to need to know the language that is used. This is a game that sees players using abbreviations and acronyms that if you don’t get, you will find your gameplay suffers. Here are some of the main ones to be aware of:
- LoL – League of Legends
- CS – Creep Score
- Gank – Gang Kill
- KS – Kill Steal
- Drag – Dragon
- CC – Crowd Control
- AFK – Away from keyboard
There is more to the language than just this, but these are a great starting point. With no knowledge of the language being used, you will quickly find yourself lost and unaware of what is happening.
Get to know the map
Summoner’s Rift is the main game map for LoL. You will find that this is split into three lanes – top, middle, and bottom. You will also find that within the map there is a jungle and it is here that you will find monsters that spawn. You will see your character being rewarded if you manage to defeat these monsters.
Where you start on the map at the beginning of a game will depend upon the character that you have chosen. You will find that characters have certain strengths that make them more suited to playing in certain positions. The more that you understand the map, the better your game will be.
Play around with different characters
Having just said that some characters are better suited to certain parts of the map, and will actually start the game in different places, it is worth exploring these characters. You will find that by reaching level 5 you unlock even more characters. While you have a young profile make the most of it by trying out as many different characters as you can.
Master the hotkeys
As with any other game, the hotkeys in LoL are designed to save time during the gameplay. You will soon see that knowing the hotkeys can make a huge difference and can even influence who wins and who loses. Although the hotkeys are many, they are well worth learning. Here are the main ones to get you started:
- P – Opens up the menu of items that can be purchased
- B – This teleports your character back to base
- Q, W, E, R – Champion’s main abilities
- F, D – Used for summoner spells
- G – Used to send a ping to teammates. This communicates your intentions or warns them of threats.
- Tab – Shows you the stats page for the game that is in progress
As soon as you have these hotkeys memorized it is vital that you move on and begin to learn the rest.
