Kingpin: Reloaded, the remaster of the 1999 cult classic FPS has been delayed to 2021, publisher 3D Realms and the remaster team at Slipgate Ironworks announced. The game was originally supposed to launch this Summer but some major changes have happened during development that led to the delay of the game.

In a post on the Steam community hub, the team behind the remaster explains that the original plan was to recreate the game in a modern engine (since the original’s source code has been lost) but the studio realized that “in order to get the game to Feel 100% like the original (Including the fantastic path-finding for AI, etc.), a better approach would be to reverse engineer the original game and engine completely”.

The reverse engineering process is almost complete also close to being done with re-creating every texture in the game from scratch. The studio hopes to enter the open beta stage in January and share more videos, gameplay and screenshots from the game.

Kingpin: Reloaded brings new life to the Quake II engine classic by adding 4K resolution, ultrawide support, rebalanced gameplay, and improved graphics in Enhanced mode. Controller support makes the game more accessible for anyone who wants to explore the depths of Kingpin’s depravity. Overall improvements like new quest and conversation systems make Reloaded even better than the original.
