A few days ago, out of nowhere, THQ Nordic has announced via Twitter that they have acquired the rights to Kingdoms of Amalur IP from 38 studios, but things are reportedly a bit different from what they appear.

According to Eurogamer, “EA still has the publishing rights to Reckoning,” and “About any other details about the relationship between EA and 38 Studios” THQ Nordic refused to comment.

THQ Nordic further added: “At this stage we ‘only’ acquired the intellectual property. Given our track record, we know what the burning questions (remaster, remake, port to current-gen systems etc.) are, but we decided do not answer those specifically as we tend to put our heads together first and then do our homework, and only start to talk about anything once we feel confident and very familiar with the franchise.”

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is an underrated action RPG written by the legendary R.A. Salvatore and developed by former baseball star Curt Shilling’s 38 Studios and Big Huge Games. Published by Electronic Arts, the game underperformed due to a lack of marketing and thus, 38 Studios went bankrupt. It didn’t stop the game from gathering a cult status, however. Reckoning is the closest equivalent to a single player World of Warcraft, and features a badass combat system to boot.
