Steam has officially announced the awardees for the 2018 Steam Awards. The list included various titles, including Game of the Year, which allowed all Steam users to vote for a game in every category. Voting for the Steam Awards began during the Steam Winter Sale in 2018.
PLAYERUNKNOWN’S BATTLEGROUNDS walks away with the Game of the Year award, which is surprising, and yet not so surprising. The game still enjoys a appreciable playerbase, and a large fraction of regular players are likely to vote for it. The game does have its own share of problems, with developers PUBG Corporation often ignoring, or delaying fundamental updates for fixing the game. CD Projekt Red won the Best Developer award, which isn’t surprising at all, considering their dedication to customer satisfaction since the release of The Witcher 3. The Witcher itself earns the Best Environment award, which is another well deserved award.
Grand Theft Auto V takes the Labor of Love award, thanks to years of updates for enhancing the gameplay experience years after release. Thanks to Rockstar Game’s efforts,GTA Online was still a thing in 2018. The Better with Friends award goes to Rainbow Six : Siege, the game that grew from the fall of Counter Strike : Global Offensive in 2018. Rocket League walks away with the Most Fun With a Machine award, being the most popular title that fits the description of the award.
The surprise really comes from Skyrim VR, which won the VR Game of the Year award, and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which won the Best Alternative History award.
