God of War’s new 2D action platformer from PlayStation Studios’ Santa Monica Studio and Mega Cat Studios sends players back to ancient Greece in this new story set during Kratos’ youth

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced God of War: Sons of Sparta today, a 2D action adventure filled with rich, hand-drawn pixel art characters and environments. Developed by Mega Cat Studios in partnership with PlayStation Studios’ Santa Monica Studio, Sons of Sparta brings the series to a brand-new genre. As part of God of War’s year-long 20th anniversary celebration, fans were given an extra surprise as the wait for hands on won’t be a wait at all with the game launching on PlayStation 5 alongside its reveal.

Players return to the series’ Greek roots in an all-new story penned by the writing team that brought players God of War (2018), God of War Ragnarök, and God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla. Set while Kratos undergoes the brutal training period Spartan cadets endure at the Agoge, the story follows Kratos and his brother Deimos as they journey far beyond the home they know. Venturing into the beautiful yet deadly region of Laconia beyond Sparta’s walls, they face relentless threats that push their training to its limits. Along the way, the brothers are forced to confront the true meaning of duty, honor, and brotherhood.
Sons of Sparta is thrilled to welcome back two actors reprising their roles as Kratos in the Greek saga. TC Carson returns as the adult version of Kratos who serves as the story’s narrator, while Antony Del Rio portrays the younger version of Kratos, as he did in God of War: Ghost of Sparta.

Developed in collaboration with Mega Cat Studios, Sons of Sparta takes God of War staples and translates them like never before into a retro-inspired 2D action adventure. Stunning high-definition pixel art environments will take players on a journey through a variety of locations that bring Kratos’ homeland to life with incredible detail. Sons of Sparta features both new creatures never seen before from Greek mythology, as well as the return of iconic classics from the original trilogy – all faithfully translated into 2D art and animation.
With Sons of Sparta, players will experience God of War’s signature kinetic combat in an all-new genre. Customize weapons, learn new skills, and harness the Gifts of Olympus, powerful divine artifacts, to end foes with brutal finishers.
The return of fan favorite elements are not limited to voice actors or creatures either, as Bear McCreary returns to score Sons of Sparta with an incredible soundtrack that melds retro aesthetics with God of War’s signature sweeping orchestral and choral style.
