Obsidian has announced that, Beast of Winter, the first big expansion out of a planned three for Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, will be released on August 2 of this year.

According to Obsidian, “Upon receiving a missive from an isle of worshipers to the god of entropy and disaster, Beast of Winter takes the Watcher and his crew to the southernmost reaches of the Deadfire Archipelago. The Watcher is thought to be the harbinger of the end of all things and worshipers of the god of cold and decay, Rymrgand, have called upon the Watcher to fulfill their destiny.” It seems like the Watcher is going to be at odds with the gods of Eora once again.

But of course one can’t spell Deadfire without mentioning the free DLCs. August is no exception. Coming in August is the big 2.0 update accompanied by the free Deck of Many Things DLC. Update 2.0 will squash various bugs and add new challenge modes in which you can test your Watcher capabilities. It’s the biggest free DLC the game has seen thus far, and will follow a strange merchant ship that’s just arrived in Deadfire looking to sell a bunch of magical items.

The rest of the two expansions will be released eventually after Beast of Winter. Each expansion is priced at $10, or they can be pre-purchased all together as part of a $25 season pass.
