As noticed by a user on Reddit, Nintendo has once again extended the license for ownership of their survival horror IP, Eternal Darkness.

Originally meant for the N64, Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem was released for the Nintendo GameCube in 2002. It introduced a revolutionary mechanic called the Sanity Meter which on becoming low, caused weird stuff to happen to the player or the game, like hallucinations and even breaking the fourth wall by displaying a (fake) blue screen of death. Despite critical acclaim, the game did not sell well (only about half a million units sold worldwide) but it did end up gathering a cult following.

While so far Nintendo hasn’t done anything with the IP, this license extension may suggest that they’re coming up with something for the Switch. Perhaps a sequel?

And speaking of sequels, a spiritual successor to the game, called Shadow Of The Eternals is apparently still in the works by Eternal Darkness director Denis Dyack, despite facing three failed Kickstarter attempts. It’s supposed to come out for the PlayStation 4, PC and Nintendo Switch (after likely dropping development on the Wii U version).

What do you make of this? Would you like to see a new Eternal Darkness game?
