The stealth-action genre in video games has evolved significantly since the debut of Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation in 1998. The proliferation of action-based games has influenced traditional stealth mechanics, as seen in the differences between Metal Gear Solid V and its earliest predecessor. While titles such as Hitman, Assassin’s Creed, and Aragami have introduced innovative mechanics, the stealth genre seems to have relied on other engaging factors to keep up in the race. Today’s title shakes things up by blending elements from various games. It combines Assassin’s Creed’s parkour, Aragami’s shadow stealth, Splatoon’s visuals, and Metal Gear’s intricate level design to forge a distinctive blend. The game in focus is Ereban: Shadow Legacy, a 3D stealth platformer developed and published by Baby Robot Games.

Ereban: Shadow Legacy launched on April 10, 2024, and can be purchased for PC via Steam. Although it was initially slated for release on Xbox Game Pass, alterations in the game’s publishing arrangements have prevented its availability on Xbox Game Pass at launch. As of now, there is no information regarding a PlayStation release. In this swift stealth platformer, players assume the role of Ayana, the sole survivor of an ancient lineage, wielding enigmatic shadow abilities and advanced gadgets.

A Lone Survivor

“Ereban: Shadow Legacy” immerses players in the role of Ayana, the sole survivor of the Ereban lineage, endowed with the unique power to meld with the shadows. Set against the backdrop of a universe ruled by powerful megacorporations, Ayana’s quest leads her to unravel the secrets of her heritage and the history of her people in a bid to rescue a faltering cosmos.

Although the story may not be particularly intriguing, it benefits from a well-executed pace. However, there are a few missed opportunities for character development, particularly in giving Ayana a more complex personality. As the game primarily emphasizes its 3D platforming aspects, the narrative often becomes secondary, with less emphasis on cinematic elements. Additionally, the tutorial section can be cumbersome to navigate, which somewhat disrupts the initial pacing of the game.

The length of the campaign varies with the playing style. Players focused on main objectives can expect about 25 hours of gameplay. Completionists aiming for 100% might invest over 100 hours exploring the world of Ereban. While suitable for a casual playthrough, it can be a grueling endeavor for completionists due to repetitive elements. The game boasts a wealth of content, yet it all seems to lack polish.

When Stealth Takes a Backseat

The core gameplay mechanic of Ereban: Shadow Legacy is its shadow stealth system. Players can manipulate shadows to create paths, hide from enemies, or even use them as platforms. This system is not just a gimmick; it’s integral to the game’s puzzles and level progression, requiring players to think creatively about their environment. The shadow manipulation also extends to combat, where Ayana can use her powers to dispatch enemies silently or avoid them altogether. The combat mechanics are well-implemented, although the game primarily leans toward stealth rather than intense combat sequences. 

The level design in Ereban: Shadow Legacy stands out as a highlight. Every level is designed with great attention to detail, leveraging shadow mechanics to create a balanced mix of expansive and confined spaces that test the player’s stealth abilities. The platforming aspects are woven into the levels with finesse, demanding exact timing and a keen sense of space. This approach to platforming harkens back to the golden era of stealth games, offering a gratifying journey for enthusiasts of the genre.

Despite its notable features, the game is hindered by clumsy movement, cumbersome controls, and unpolished combat animations. The scant diversity of adversaries could result in repetitive confrontations. The game is best enjoyed in short, one-hour intervals, as longer sessions may grow wearisome. Its primary drawback, however, is its resemblance to a 3D platformer rather than a stealth game, with the stealth components often eclipsed by the platforming mechanics.

A Cell Shaded World

Visually, Ereban: Shadow Legacy opts for a stylized, comic-like aesthetic that suits its narrative and gameplay. Its cell-shaded visuals bear a heavy resemblance to titles like Splatoon. Fully voice-acted cutscenes enhance the storytelling experience. As for performance, the game runs smoothly on PC, with a few hiccups. Some animations could be smoother, and there are occasional collision issues, but these are minor complaints that don’t detract from the overall experience.

However, regarding soundtracks and background scores, it lacks distinctive features. The voiceovers are serviceable, and while the cast strives to infuse the lackluster plot with significance, they ultimately fall short. Given its relatively modest price tag, these shortcomings might be easily forgiven.

Real Talk

Ereban Shadow Legacy ambitiously attempts to juggle multiple elements and succeeds in most areas, yet it is ultimately hindered by its lack of refinement. With its prominent features, it leans more toward a 3D platformer rather than a game rooted in the Stealth genre. Nonetheless, its emphasis on level design and a variety of unique gameplay mechanics, despite a lackluster plot, renders it an enjoyable experience.
