Frictional Games is back in time for Halloween to scare you with its direct sequel to its 2010 hit Amnesia: Dark Descent. The previously teased Amnesia: Rebirth will be released on October 20 on the PlayStation 4 and Windows platform (Steam, Epic, GOG).
The new trailer shows protagonist Tasi Trianon’s journey through the Algerian desert in 1937. Frictional Games referred her ordeals to “do everything and anything to survive”. According to their press release, they had planned Amnesia: Rebirth to be a “straightforward and simple” project, but the game grew in size and ambition.
From crashed planes in the desert, to long-forgotten temple ruins, and alien landscapes – the trailer contains a smorgasbord of forbidden experiences that will have horror players on their feet!
The past 10 years has also seen a flood of new horror games, and we wouldn’t allow a new Amnesia game to simply be lost in the crowd. It had to stand out and to pave new ground. We couldn’t allow it to be anything less.
Creative Director at Frictional Games, Thomas Grip, revealed in a news release, “We aim to go beyond simple jump-scares and to affect players on a deeper level. While Rebirth will contain the terrifying encounters and sights you expect from an Amnesia game, it has a lot more focus on narrative than previous entries in the series. We want the player to form a strong bond with Tasi and intimately share her tribulations. This will not be your run-of-the-mill horror experience.”
Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs was developed in 2013 by The Chinese Room and published by Frictional Games. Although Amnesia: Rebirth will not follow that storyline, the developers in an interview on GameInformer, had high praise for that game, and said that they learned a lot from it.
