As the launch of Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss approaches, publisher NACON and developer Big Bad Wolf have released a new gameplay trailer spotlighting one of the title’s defining elements: investigation. The latest footage centers on protagonist Noah as he explores the eerie remains of an abandoned underwater mining facility, offering a closer look at the psychological tension and investigative mechanics that drive the experience.
This new trailer takes us through the oppressive corridors of the Ocean-I mining station, which Noah finds deserted. The location bears the marks of a fierce struggle and a devastating madness: claw marks on the walls, strange runes painted in blood, unknown organic matter, a severed arm… all clues that point to violent and occult events. To understand what happened, the player must use their wits and the abilities of their personal AI called KEY.
KEY plays a central role in the investigative process. Permanently linked to the database of the Ancile—the agency Noah serves—it can cross-reference field discoveries with records from previous cases. By analyzing materials found on-site, KEY determines their composition, unlocking new sonar frequencies that allow players to detect other objects of similar origin. This system encourages careful evidence gathering and layered analysis.
The sonar itself functions as a versatile exploration tool. Beyond illuminating darkened environments and revealing hidden passageways, it can be tuned to specific frequencies to track particular clues. In the trailer, Noah follows blood traces through the station, gradually reconstructing the sequence of events that led to the crew’s disappearance.
Environmental interaction is another key mechanic. Objects scattered throughout the station can conceal vital information, and players are encouraged to inspect items from multiple angles to uncover hidden details essential to progressing the investigation.
The game promises a branching narrative structure in which each chapter presents difficult choices. Players must decide whether to pursue immediate but dangerous leads—risking a faster descent into madness—or take a more measured approach that demands deeper investigation. According to the developers, every decision will directly influence both Noah’s sanity and the story’s outcome.
Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss is a narrative investigation game inspired by the universe of Lovecraft. In this frightening first-person thriller, the player embodies Noah, an agent of the Ancile, an office specializing in occult affairs, investigating the mysterious disappearance of miners in the heart of the Pacific Ocean. His research will plunge him into the depths of the immense labyrinthine prison of R’lyeh, an ancient sunken city where Cthulhu is held captive. The player and theirAI companion, KEY, will have to solve complex puzzles, make choices that will influence his destiny, and try to resist the corruption of the mind caused by the influence of Cthulhu.
Cthulhu: The Cosmic Abyss will be available on PlayStation®5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and on nacongaming.com on April 16, 2026.
