Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon Review – An Excellent S2 Setup

Kaiju No. 8 – loved by its fans and very positively received by the anime community worldwide – is back with its movie Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon. As the year unfolds with many fan-favourite releases, Kaiju No. 8 Season 2 is all set for a tentative premiere in July 2025! And where does Recon fit into the picture? As a great segue to season 2.

Pacing and What to Expect

The movie is perfect for people wanting to brush up on the events of the previous season, along with immersing in a 20-minute special episode that follows right after. The movie retains most of the major events, action, and fun of season 1, keeping a tight, strict pace, ensuring it doesn’t bore the viewers. 

Overall, it is essential to note that it’s a 75% recap, and 25% new content that focuses more on the relationship between the squadron and effectively sets up the beginning of season 2. The newer content is the first episode of Season 2 called “Hoshina’s Day Off”.

And despite its pace, the movie feels packed with nostalgia. It was a delight to revisit all the characters and reimmerse in the world of Kaiju. I do believe one would find the bonding time between the duo Kafka and Reno somewhat lacklustre, and one can visibly see some segments skipped; however, the general entertainment makes up for it. 

For first-time viewers, it is recommended to watch the series first, since the movie on its own would not do justice to all that Kaiju has to offer, especially with the development of character relationships in the story. It’s best for fans and folks looking to revisit the series before season 2 sets in. 

Animations, Audio, and Soundtracks 

A Production I.G work, the animations and audio are up to the previous season’s standards and consistent with what the studio usually delivers. The story’s action-packed sequences and swagger are brought to life by its soundtracks, and the subs and dubs are both enjoyable. There isn’t a beat to miss in this one. 

So if you watched the previous season, the production is entirely the same, allowing you to enjoy that same quality experience once again. 

Verdict

Kaiju No. 8: Mission Recon is an excellent movie that is a must-watch for all fans. It is not only an opportunity to experience the impeccable quality on the biggest screens, but also maintains an exciting pace that leads up to the never-before-seen season 2 content. But if you’re a very recent fan, the recap might put you off, so it’s better to walk in after the interval.
